Materiality, a theme already addressed with our PAPER TRAIL exhibition in 2023, turns into OUT OF THE WOODWORKS for 2024: an exploration of wood as a sustainable and eco-responsible material, offering innovative solutions in design and architecture.
The first traces of wood being used to create tools, weapons, vessels or shelters date back to prehistoric times. Its use in construction can be traced back to Greek and Roman civilizations: their temples, palaces and houses were often built in wood. Throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and right up to the industrial revolution, wood processing techniques multiplied and continued to develop.
It was not until the 20th century that wood as a building material lost its appeal to concrete and steel. Materials that have a high carbon footprint, with limited recycling capacity in the case of concrete.
As we take heed of the depletion of our natural ressources, wood is regain its place as an innovative and versatile solution. Its low environmental impact is due to its capacity for renewal, thanks to a responsible forest management. Wood is also proving to be a high-tech material with astonishing properties, especially when digital tools are integrated into the design process. The possibilities seem endless.
OUT OF THE WOODWORKS is the call for projects that aims to demonstrate a new appreciation for the value and current role of wood in our material world.
Your projects will reflect an approach blending tradition and high tech, with one particularity: the starting point must be an existing wooden object. Rather than using new wood as a base material, the idea is to recover wood that has already been used and give it a new lease of life. Starting with wooden objects, parts or furniture, mutating them, changing their function or appearance, reinventing their structure, and creating something new. All types of wood are welcome, and all woodworking methods are encouraged, especially the most innovative. The lifespan of wood is infinite. That’s what OUT OF THE WOODWORKS is looking to demonstrate.

Son usage dans la construction date des civilisations grecques et romaines: leurs temples, palais et maisons étaient souvent construites en bois. A travers le Moyen Age et la Renaissance, et jusqu'à la révolution industrielle, les techniques de traitement du bois se sont multipliées et ont poursuivi leur développement.
C’est au XXe siècle que le bois comme matériau de construction perd de son attrait au profit du béton et de l’acier. Des matériaux dont la fabrication comporte une empreinte carbone élevée, avec une capacité de recyclage limitée pour le béton.
Une prise de conscience s’impose aujourd’hui pour éviter l’épuisement de nos ressources naturelles. Le bois reprend sa place comme solution innovante et polyvalente. Son impact environnemental est faible en raison de sa capacité de renouvellement, lorsque la gestion forestière est responsable. Le bois se révèle aussi comme un matériau high tech avec des propriétés étonnantes, surtout lorsque l’on intègre les outils numériques dans la réalisation. Les possibilités semblent infinies.

Applicants
- All candidates must be graduates with a maximum of 7 years since their graduation.
- All candidates must be graduates from a Swiss design school with a Bachelor or Master degree in industrial design.
- All candidates must be born after 1990.
- All candidates must be resident in Switzerland.
- All selected candidates will be required ed to ensure a certain number of hours of presence at the booth during the week of the Salone.
Candidats
